Ativan vs Xanax
Ativan is made so that it takes longer to start working but it's properties of sedation last much longer than Xanax. It is "stronger" than Xanax in that respect. If you are being treated for anxiety panic disorder, it is helpful because it is long-acting. Especially for those with these types of disorders that interfere with falling asleep and staying asleep without interruptions and trying to fall back asleep.
Xanax 1mg might seem stronger to most people because it begins acting much more quickly in your system, thus you feel the effects fast. However, it works for about 4-5 hours only, so if someone requires relief for longer periods of time during the day and/or night, you would need to take more Xanax to continue its effect.
What's the difference?
They can have similar effects -help your body relax, but work differently. If you find that xanax isn't helping you as much, maybe ask your doctor if you can try switching to ativan for a while. They would have to find the right dose for you, but it may be worthwhile if you have been on xanax for a while!
Xanax has the shortest half life of all the benzos. It's used primarily for panic attacks. Ativan has a little longer half life and is used for sleep and general anxiety. It just depends on what specific symptoms you're experiencing. Either way be very careful with any benzo. They are more addictive than almost any medication you can take.
